Lumines: My Dark Secret Revealed

A screen shot of lumines

I looove yooooou

I have a confession, my geeky compadres. I know I have told you all before that I am not much of a gamer. Well, I am here to tell you today that is not…entirely true. In fact, I have had a problem with one game in particular. A game that has kept me up at night dreaming of rotating blocks with interchanging skins and upbeat, grating music playing over and over again but only reaching ears who are impervious to its annoying charm.

Lumines is the one puzzle game that has ever held my interest, and it has had ahold of my heart for four years now. It started on the PSP and has made a spot in my XBox games list. It is the only game that kept me up late at nights. I was playing it when three buildings exploded on main street of Bozeman and made my house shake like it had been hit by a truck. I remember Lumines whenever someone speaks of that morning. I gave myself trigger thumb with that game. My high score was around 2 million points.

Holy Adult Scene, Skip Beat!

A discussion of Skip Beat Manga Chapters 190-197

Skip Beat took things to a whole new level in volumes 190-197.  Kyouko is forced to accept a ride to the studio or be late for work after her abduction. Who sees her riding in a car with Sho? Ren of course.

This leads to a lot angst for Kyouko – because she’s been on the receiving end of angry Ren – and Ren himself, because let’s face it, he’s the angst king. In the midst of all the upset, Sho uses Kyouko’s uncertainty to convince her to make a really dumb promise, since we all know where things are going with Ren. She pretty much told him that if she couldn’t become a famous actress without falling for Ren and ‘shaming’ herself, she would become Sho’s waitress for life. Kyouko’s cute and everything, but she’s pretty easy to fool – especially by master manipulator Sho. Which is too bad, since she promised herself she’d never let a man fool her again. Oops.

Valentine’s Day Gift Guide for the Geeky Gal

I asked some geeky friends to help me put together a Valentine’s Day gift guide that would be sure to impress any geeky gal. Make her swoon with these nerd approved gifts!

For the MTG Lover

girl with dragon's egg magic card holder

My sister is a major Magic:The Gathering nut. Like, sit in the back room at Rook’s and play for hours. Like you whip out the deck you played last year and she rambles on about all the new rules and regulations. Like going to the Magic panels at Comic-Con San Diego last year was a highlight.

When I asked her advice to see what a nerdy lady such as herself would love to get this Valentine’s day, she didn’t even have to think about it. Apparently a Dragon’s Egg is the best Magic Card carrier a girl could ask for. Easy to carry, smart design, and it keeps your cards in mint condition while they lay in wait for their next game.

The Dragon’s egg

It’s no surprise that an accessory for Magic Cards is called a Dragon’s Egg – and how cool would it be to give it as a gift?

You can find this sweet accessory                                  at Power 9 Pro’s website.

Price: $34.95

For The Otaku

This is definitely on my wish list for Valentine’s Day.  I watch way too much anime, and I am totally okay with it. Sound similar to a geeky lady in your life? You may be asking yourself a question, then – what does someone who loves anime want?

Team Seven Back TogetherEasy access to more anime, of course. Crunchyroll’s extensive library can be accessed from most of our favorite devices, and makes a quest for a new show to glomp on as strenuous as a stroll through the neighborhood park.

You can choose as many months of free watching bliss as will fit into your budget. Your lady already has Crunchyroll? No worries – she can just apply it to her existing account.

For the Whedonites and Zombie Lovers

Helenna Santos-Levy is one of my favorite geeky ladies, and she gave me some great ideas for those girls who love Whedon (gah, me!), zombies, and the world of PR and marketing.

Helenna's Geeky Valentines Gift Suggestions

Helenna Santos-Levy showing off her sweet gift picks!

“I love a good geeky gift!  And I was lucky enough to get some awesome gifts this past Christmas.  I haven’t bought myself books in forever, so my husband bought me “Joss Whedon: The Complete Companion” because I’m a hardcore Whedonite, and Sally Hogshead’s “Fascinate” since I’m totally into marketing and PR.  I then got him “The Walking Dead” board game. Which truthfully was for me too of course!

I’ve also been compiling a ton of my favorite geeky things at “My Geek Out Guide” Pinterest board. I think any geeky chick would love the items on there!  And yes, I did just purchase the “Bam!” sweatshirt that you see there!

Happy geeking out this Valentine’s!” ~Helenna Santos-Levy

For the Cumberbitch

Sherlock and Holmes Keychains

Soooo cute!

If your girl sends you texts that say things like The Kitchen. Come at once if convenient. If inconvenient, come anyway, then you should probably check out these Sherlock and Watson key chains.  It’s a way of feeding her inner Sherlock while telling her how much you care.

CumberbitchesIn an act of heartwarming bromance, my best nerd friend Lixie bought these key chains for my Christmas present, leaving no doubt in my Sherlock, BBC ridden brain that our love was born of fate and sealed with geek. One is enscripted with the words you are the Sherlock to my Watson, the other says you are the Watson to my Sherlock. She holds one, and I hold the other – a constant reminder of our love that we see every time we unlock the front doors to our houses or get in the car.

These adorable key chains can be found at that magical site we love and know as Etsy.

Price: $19.95

For the Cosplayer and Gamer

Zendulo

Lady Zendulo

My gorgeous redheaded friend of awesome (and one of my heroes) Zendulo told me a few surprises that would make her Valentine’s Day – and I’m guessing her Valentine’s Night, as well.

“My all time fave geek girl gifts are multi-player games and delivery food, though I would be open to sexy roleplaying gear as Masterchief/Cortana, The Doctor/Amy Pond or any of the other great love affairs that have gotten into my heart through it’s science-fiction door.” ~ Zendulo

Cosplay is not easy feat, but if you’ve got the time, resources, money, and skills you might just be making your geeky girl the happiest on earth. This is one of those things that can be difficult to price out…so let’s just call it priceless?

Halo 4 cover

Halo 4
Price: $40

A few video games come to mind for the romantic, kill-things-while-eating-take-out on the couch together scenario. I’m guessing she might already have it, But Halo 4 provides hours of fun for my husband and I, and nothing breeds bonding like screaming obscenities at the screen while frantically searching for more guns.

You can buy this kick-ass game at Google for just $40.

Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm

You could also really make her day and pre-order StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm. It’s not out until March 12th, so you’ll just have to give her a pretty card – but believe me when I say she won’t care. Most gamers I talk to start to do weird pirouettes across the room while mumbling things about ‘strategic decisions’ and ‘March is going to be the best month ever.’

Price: $39.96 on Amazon

For The Coffee Nerd

good coffee

Mmmmm….coffee….

My husband and I love ourselves a good cup of coffee, and we don’t mind taking the extra time to make it right each morning. If you have a lady friend who loves gadgets and is a coffee snob, I have the perfect present for you.

Aerobie-AeroPress

The Aerobie Aeropress is amazing in its simplicity and its ability to make a kick ass cup of coffee. The process definitely takes more patience than a coffee maker, but that won’t make a difference to someone who is passionate about making a good cup o’ joe. What’ll really get her going? That shit is all science, baby.    Price: $25.95

Hario Hand coffee grinder

Really want to impress? Pair it with a Hario MSS 1B Mini Coffee Grinder, and own her heart.

Price: $33.40

There you have it! I hope we have helped you figure out the perfect gift for your geeky lady! Happy Valentine’s Day!
